This bedroom used to be a teenager’s room that I was to transform into a functional and relaxing guest bedroom. It needed not only a proper bed, but also lots of storage.

The room faces south, so I thought I could go more adventurous  with colours and patterns here. The design started with the floral drapery fabric by Richloom that I fell in love with the moment I saw it. I sewed two double width curtain panels to cover the whole window and added sheers to filter the light. I used the fabric for the bolster pillow as well. It took me quite a while to find a wallpaper to go with it, but Dianthus from A Shade Wilder was totally worth the search. Isn’t it a perfect match?

As the wallpaper is very dramatic, there was a risk of overdoing it. Making a framed accent piece of it to visually extend the headboard seemed like a perfect solution. My initial plan for the walls was to pull the background colour from the wallpaper, as I usually do, but that particular navy tone was too bright. Yes, even navy can be too bright! So I chose a muted and calmer shade.

When working on a budget, IKEA is always your friend. Their wardrobe system fitted perfectly from wall to wall. I just customized it with porcelain knobs from Anthropologie. I upholstered the headboard of IKEA Malm bed with golden cream fabric to make it soft and comfortable. The quilt is big enough to cover storage drawers under the bed. This neutral background needed just a few vivid throw pillows and a soft navy blanket to complete the look.

The final step was creating some open storage and a small sitting area. I built custom bookshelves with golden brackets from Anthropologie and hang a golden clock which is a real star on the navy wall. I also restored and reupholstered a chair that was already there to match the new palette and sewed a small accent pillow using the headboard fabric.

And here it is! Three days of hard work totally paid off. I hope you like it!
